Cuban Sliders

This Cuban sandwich recipe is one of my favorite ways to use pork shoulder! You can roast the pork just for these sandwiches, or you can just use leftover pulled pork!

Ingredients

For the pork:

  • 4 pound boneless pork shoulder
  • 1 cup pulp-free orange juice
  • 1 tablespoon cumin
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon onion powder
  • 2 teaspoons salt

For the sandwiches:

  • 12 Hawaiian rolls split
  • 12 thin slices deli ham
  • 12 thin slices Swiss cheese
  • 12 dill pickle slices
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons dijon mustard

For topping:

  • 1/4 cup butter melted
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon mustard powder

Instructions

To make the pork:

  • Add the orange juice to a 6 quart slow cooker. Stir together the dry ingredients and rub into the pork. Place pork in orange juice, cover, and cook on low for 8 hours or until the pork easily shreds with a fork.
  • When pork is finished cooking, shred with two forks.

To assemble the sandwiches:

  • Place the bottom halves of the rolls in a 9x13 baking dish. Cut the ham and cheese slices to fit the rolls and arrange them evenly over each roll.
  • Top each roll with a scoop of pulled pork and a pickle. You will have leftover pulled pork. Save for more sandwiches or to use in another recipe.
  • In a small bowl, stir together mayonnaise and mustard. Spread evenly over the top half of the rolls and place of the sliders.

To make the topping and bake:

  • In a small bowl, stir together the melted butter, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, and mustard powder until combined. Spoon liquid evenly over the tops of all the sandwiches.
  • Cover with foil and bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for 20 minutes or until cheese has melted.

Notes

Pulled Pork: This recipe works great with leftover pulled pork (so long as there is no bbq sauce on the pork) if that's what you're starting with. You can also purchase a tray of pulled pork from the grocery store, if you can can find one without barbecue sauce. Of course, our recipe here is delicious and we love that you'll have some leftover to use in other recipes or to make extra sandwiches!
Slow Cooker: All slow cookers cook differently and some run hotter than others. Your pulled pork is done when it easily shreds apart.
Make Ahead: You can easily make these 24 hours in advance. Just cover the pan with foil and refrigerate. Bake for 30-40 minutes, covered, or until the cheese has melted. The bottom rolls will get a bit crispy as they cook longer, but we love the added texture.
