So, those of you who have been around here for awhile might vaguely remember all the whining I did a couple of years ago about moving.
Let me refresh your memory: It’s hard. I don’t like it. People expect me to sweep and vacuum before they come look at the house. It’s hard. I don’t like it. It’s hard.
Ah, there you go. Now you remember.
Well, I don’t think I mentioned that we had a heck of a time selling our house and eventually cancelled our contract with our realtor and just sold it contract for deed.
The people that purchased it contract for deed were great. And then they decided they couldn’t afford it anymore and the house is mine again.
Do you know what this mean?
I’m trying to sell a house again. So, um, it’s hard. I don’t like it. People expect me to sweep and vacuum. It’s hard. I don’t like it.
This time is a little bit easier, though because the house is vacant. This means there are no short people running around dropping crumbs and leaving toys all over every available inch of floor space. Also? I didn’t have to pack even one box.
Anyway, I’m sorry I’m all wordy. It’s just selling a house is hard. I don’t like it, and stop me if I’ve already mentioned this, but people expect me to sweep and vacuum.
(I’m done now.)
So, to make myself feel better, I made donuts. Vanilla glazed vanilla donuts. With sprinkles. Because sprinkles make life happier.
Vanilla Glazed Vanilla Donuts
Ingredients
For the donuts:
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 6 tablespoons white sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
- 6 tablespoons buttermilk
- 1 large egg
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon butter melted
For the glaze:
- 1/2 cup or more powdered sugar, depending on the consistency you'd like
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1-2 teaspoons milk or cream
Instructions
To make the donuts:
- Preheat the oven to 325 and lightly grease a donut pan.
- Mix together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and cinnamon in a large bowl.
- In a small bowl, combine the buttermilk, egg, and butter, whisking to combine.
- Add the wet to the dry ingredients and mix well with a wooden spoon. The batter will be thick.
- Use two spoons to drop spoonfuls of batter into the donut pan (one to scoop and one to scrape the batter off and into the pan). You should have just enough batter for 6 donuts.
- Bake for 10 minutes or until golden and cooked through.
To make the glaze:
- While the donuts are baking, whisk together the powdered sugar, vanilla, and milk or cream until smooth. Add more liquid or powdered sugar as needed to get the consistency you prefer.
- When the donuts are finished baking and cool enough to handle, dip them in the glaze. Add sprinkles if they make you happy.

I have never even thought of making donuts from scratch… so awesome! Hope you get that whole house-selling thing worked out soon.

I don’t envy you having to sell your house (again) one bit! But at least the moving part is over…cause that really seems like it’s the worst.
Melissa says
THANK YOU. Sprinkles DO make life happier. I wish more people would realize this.

Put up a sign that says “dozen donuts free with purchase of house” ๐
I feel your cleaning pain. I just bought a mobile home and spent a week cleaning. The stove made me weep, so I sold it without cleaning it. I didn’t have a flamethrower handy to clean it.
Maria says
I feel your pain too…trying to sell as well. I am like a crazy woman, even though I vow with each showing not to get my hopes up. I have St. Joseph in the ground and still no luck. It’s so hard to do this. I need a donut pan to ease my pain and then need to make and eat these, they look great!
Chung-Ah | Damn Delicious says
I could eat about 10 of these for lunch right now ๐
DessertForTwo says
You deserve these donuts & more. Sorry, but I wish you luck selling that house again!

@DessertForTwo,
Thank you, ma’am! ๐

sprinkles for breakfast is a necessity. Karly, it stinks you have to sell your home! And sweep. I have ignored the chore of sweeping for longer than I’d care to admit, but at least you can eat a donut when you’re finished?!?
Karly says
@sally @ sallys baking addiction,
I should probably eat the donut first. I’m just as bad as the kids when it comes to dropping crumbs…

Nothing like a good donut to ease the stress of moving. Love that this recipe only makes 6 donuts, the things I would do with any more than that!
The Witch's Kitchen says
When we moved into our house 20 years ago I was complaining about how much junk we had to move. Someone piped up and said, “just wait until you see how much junk you have when you move from here!”
I calmly replied, “I’m not moving from here until they drag my cold, dead body out.” And I’m living up to that promise. That’s how much I hate moving.
Until I win the lottery, of course. Then I’ll PAY someone to do it for me!
shelly (cookies and cups) says
Moving does suck. Donuts help.
candice says
Besides from making me laugh…i also hate sweeping & cleaning….especially when there are certain individuals in my household that seem to only be able to get 65% of their food in their mouths…I think I will come to your site and oggle all the stuff you make. it is Delicious looking mmmmmmm.
good luck with the house too ~ I will be in a similar situation in about a year.
Cookbook Queen says
Oh girlie, I totally feel your pain!! Moving sucks (I’ve done it twice in the past year) and selling a house is suckier. Ours sat on the market for a looooooong time.
This is going to sound totally ridic, but a Catholic friend told me to bury a St. Joseph statue in the yard of the house we were trying to sell (you can totally buy them on amazon, they’re little figurines), and so we did and it sold in a week!! Not even kidding, pinky swear.
Love the donuts!!
Karly says
@Cookbook Queen,
We bought one of those statues the first time we tried selling it, but instead of burying it, I just stuck it in a closet and forgot about it. That’s totally probably why the house sat on the market for so long. Whoops.
Averie @ Averie Cooks says
I’m glad you made my donut recipe!
Sounds like you could use a donut, and then some, with the real estate issues. Eeek. Not good. Such a tough market to be selling in, too. I wish you luck!! (and have another donut) ๐
Karly says
@Averie @ Averie Cooks,
Selling contract for deed is surprisingly easy, especially in this market, so don’t feel too sorry for me. I was just feeling whiny when I wrote this.
And, I loved your donuts! ๐
Blog is the New Black says
Ah yes, keep baking. No sweeping.
Karly says
@Blog is the New Black,
I should turn that into a sign and hang it in my kitchen. “Keep Baking. No Sweeping.”
