My new puppy dog prefers these homemade peanut butter dog treats over any of those store bought ones! Heck, I didn’t even think they tasted bad.
Ya wanna know a fun fact about me?
I think dogs are kinda gross. They sniff and lick and, I’m not sure if you know this or not, but they don’t even use toilet paper after they potty. Ew. Gross, right?
But, then again, I’ve never had a dog growing up and I spent my entire youth avoiding everyone else’s dogs, so what do I know?
Fast forward my life 2o years and now I am a momma of TWO dogs!
Their sniffs are adorable, their licks are precious, and okay sometimes they are still gross, but it’s totally not a deal-breaker.
Oh, also? Both dogs are so fluffy I can barely survive it. We named them Biscuit and Gravy (perfect right?).
I’m in love.
Deeply, madly, irrevocably in love.
I do have a problem though. My little dog, Biscuit, is super picky on treats and some of the store-bought ones make her itchy. What does a loving momma of dogs do???
Bust out the homemade peanut butter dog treat recipe!
Preheat your oven while you are preparing the dough, as this won’t take very long.
The dough for these rolls out very easy so long as you use plenty of flour for your work surface and the top of your dough.
My dogs loved these homemade peanut butter dog treats!
Get that dough rolled out and use the cookie cutter of your choice. I choose a bone shape of course! Buy it on Amazon (affiliate link).
When you are placing them on the cookie sheet you can load the sheet up. The dough really doesn’t spread.
These homemade dog treats are a cinch to make and I bet they’ll make your pup feel all warm, fuzzy, and loved.
Helpful tip: you can bake them a couple minutes less than the recipe states for the small doggies that don’t like softer treats.
Is it safe for my dog to try the raw dog treat recipe while I am preparing it?
It is not recommended to let your dogs taste the dough as it is preparing. Wait until fully cooked before giving them a taste test!
The raw flour in the recipe can be harmful to your fur-baby if they eat it too soon.
How long are my homemade dog treats good for?
You should keep your pet treats in an airtight container. You can expect them to last two weeks at room temp.
If you want to make a big batch, you can freeze them for up to six months. Just be sure to thaw them out on the counter before serving.

For those of you who are curious, Biscuit is a Zuchon – a ShihTzu and Bichon Frise mix. Gravy, our bigger dog, is a terrier mix. They’re both so sweet and fluffy!

For allergic dogs, I took the egg out and substituted in 1/2 c. Applesauce, and used oat flour instead of wheat flour. I also took out the honey, and they turned out GREAT!
Angie says
That is one of the cutest puppies ever!
Just letting you know that wheat is not a very digestible ingredient for dogs and it’s in the top 3 for causing allergies in pups! Most dogs are OK with it, but many (like mine) are allergic. You can tell because they itch a lot, especially in the ears. I want to try this recipe but substitute the wheat flour with barley or brown rice flour. MUCH healthier for doggies!
Other than that, I am excited to try this for my pup! He loves peanut butter and banana treats!

The first part of this post is hilarious. As someone who has always had a dog, I cannot relate. But my husband had never had one, so when we got our pup he was very apprehensive. Of course, he loves him now. Dogs are the best.
Quick question — how long do these treats last? I’m not much into baking/cooking for humans (much to my dismay) and was thinking about making these as Christmas gifts for the dogs in our family, but don’t want to do so if they spoil really quickly.
Thanks! And have fun with Biscuit!
Karly says
@Jess,
I would just keep them in the freezer! Either freeze them before baking or freeze them already baked and just thaw before gifting.
Hope your doggies like them!

Your pup is gorgeous. I love yor recipes. One thing though, if you ever decide to get another furbaby, please consider adoption. There are so many furbabies out there needing homes. I adopted 2 pure breed Dachshunds. They are so precious to me. I didn’t need or want papers. They are mine no matter what. Have a great day and enjoy your precious lil furbaby. ๐

Love your pup! I just finished these, as in they’re still warm on the counter:) I made a few changes, I subbed rice flower b/c it’s gluten free and better for pups, and I left out the maple syrup since pups don’t need the added sugar. I gave my pooch a taste and he absolutely loved it! Thanks for the recipe ideas:)

These sound fantastic! Just a suggestion for next time though: instead of using the wheat flour, try using brown rice flour or another type of flour thats gluten free. In general, dogs and their tummies do not handle gluten well- as a matter of fact. there are lots of dogs that are alergic to it….By the way, your little baby is super adorable! I just want to snuggle with her all day long :)!

Just made these for my dogs today and they can’t get enough of them! I cut them in cute little Christmas cookie shapes since its Christmas time! I didn’t have any bananas so I subbed applesauce and it worked great! Love how healthy these are for dogs and they obviously taste great too!

Super cute puppy! Looks a lot like my Randi. She’s a pure Shih Tzu, but she’s all white, so people often mistake her for a mix or a Maltese. But no, she’s just odd like her mama!
Anyway, I don’t know if you will still see comments on this entry, but if you do, could you tell me if it matters very much whether you get special pure maple syrup or the store waffle stuff? It’s the only ingredient I don’t already have and it’s Randi’s eighth birthday.

Oh my word! I was looking at the pictures with my dog sitting next to me, and I thought how similar they looked. It’s because mine is also a ShihTzu-Bichon Frise mix. The breeder called the mix, “Teddy Bear.” ๐ Anyways, mine is 3 now, and he is precious and the cutest thing ever. You will love how Biscuit is and looks 3 years from now! They have the best personalities. Now I am gonna have to make these treats for my dog, Bo. I’m sure he will never want anything else again. ๐

Your Biscuit is absolutely adorable. I have a Shih Tzh/ Poodle and she looks very much like your little one. Mine is almost 2 years old and weighs 6 pounds. She was 3 pounds when I got her at 7 weeks old. I am going to make these doggie cookies this weekend. I know my Chrissy will love them,
Kim says
These look good; i’m going to try them for my herd of six today;)

I cannot stop looking at the pictures of that cute little pup, I just want to snuggle with her!!!! Enjoy ๐

Just so you know I am making this weekend for my picky little fur-babies, some of whom come from shelters and are now too good to eat store bought treats;)

Cutest. Dog. I’ve. Ever. Seen. I seriously want to steal her. I’ve always wanted a dog and now I’m pretty positive when I do get one–it’s going to be a ShihTzu and Bichon Frise mix! And I love the fact that you put a recipe for dog treats on your blog! So clever!!
