These hot and melty HAWAIIAN HAM AND CHEESE SLIDERS are topped with a buttery mixture of seasonings and baked until warm and toasty. Easy, fast, and a family favorite!
I’m fairly certain that everyone has had a ham and cheese slider on a Hawaiian roll at some point in their life and if not, well, I’m terribly sorry to hear it.
These are the BEST little Hawaiian sliders, loaded with deli sliced ham, melty Swiss cheese, and the perfect butter topping that’s loaded with flavor from ground mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and minced onion.
We make these ham and cheese sliders often. They’re a favorite of my husband’s so he asks for them for dinner quite a bit, but they’re also perfect for a get together – just be sure to make a double batch! They’re popular and they go quick!
Ingredient Notes:
Ham – We prefer thin sliced deli ham in this recipe.
Swiss – You’ll fold each piece into fourths to fit the slider. It makes for a nice, melty center in each slider!
Kings Hawaiian Rolls – The perfect rolls for making hot ham and cheese sliders! The touch of sweetness and that soft interior is perfect here.
Topping – Made with melty butter, Worcestershire sauce, ground mustard, poppy seeds, and minced onion…this is packed with flavor and soaks into the Hawaiian roll beautifully.
What Readers are Saying!
“Made these a week ago and LOVED them! Was looking for this recipe and came across this version. I did cut the butter in half and it was still so good. Thanks!” – Michelle
How to Make:
Prepare: You can really feed a crowd with these and it only takes minutes to prepare them. You just slice a package of King’s Hawaiian Rolls in half, layer the bottoms with ham and cheese, place the top pieces of bread on, and then move on to the next step to make the all important butter topping!
Topping: This topping is a mixture of melted butter, Worcestershire sauce, ground mustard, poppy seeds, and dried onion flakes.
If you work quick, you’ll just pour this melted butter mixture right over the sandwiches. Let it soak in to the bread and drip down the edges. It’s divine.
If you’re kid comes and starts arguing you with about whether or not you can drive them to the mall (or, you know, some other totally made up scenario) your butter will start to thicken back up and you’ll be able to spread the mixture over the rolls. Either way works perfect and the end result is a buttery, flavorful sandwich.
Refrigerate: Ideally you’ll refrigerate these overnight and let that butter really soak in and flavor the rolls. However, just an hour chill time will still make for a tasty and delicious ham and cheese slider.
Bake: All that’s left now is to turn these into hot ham and cheese sliders! Place the covered baking dish with the sliders into your pre-heated oven and let them get all hot and melty! Once they’ve finished you’ll want to serve them while they are still good and hot so you get that glorious melted cheese.
They’re delicious!
What We Love About This Recipe:
- These are rich and buttery with flavor from the tops of the rolls to the bottom.
- The Hawaiian rolls stay so soft and nearly melt in your mouth, but the bottom roll gets a slightly crisp crust that is just the perfect contrast to the soft, buttery goodness.
- Everyone loves a classic ham and cheese sandwich and these just take it up a notch. Classics with a twist are my favorite!
- This recipe is easy to double or triple depending on how many you’re feeding.
FAQs:
There are 252 calories per slider. To make these lighter, just use half of a slice of cheese per sandwich.
Nope, that’s just our favorite kind and generally the most popular. You could really use just about any roll or bun that is made for sliders.
It’s just a mini sandwich! The name was popularized by the onion-steamed buns from White Castle, but it has since grown to include just about anything on mini buns or rolls.

I’ve made these several times. Each time, however, the bottoms of the sandwiches get hard and overdone. I feel it ruins the potential softness of the sandwiches. I even bake them on the top shelf. How can I avoid this? Not so good with hard bottoms and soft tops. Anyone else have this issue?

You could always try reducing the heat on your oven and letting them cook a little lower. You just want them heated through and the cheese melted.

Thanks. I’ll try that next time. I should’ve thought of that. ๐

Yes! The exact same thing has happened to me every time I’ve tried to make these. I asked a coworker what she thought I was doing wrong and she just looked at me like I was crazy. Thank you for making me feel not crazy.

I thought I was the only one, Whitney! Thank you for making ME not feel crazy! ๐

You could also try putting a baking sheet underneath the rolls (either on the same rack or on the rack below). This will act as a buffer.

One of my co workers made these wonderful little sandwiches and brought them to work yesterday. They were the hit of the potluck. Absolutely delicious! I can’t wait to make them for my family this evening.
Pam says
Will the ham and cheese spoil if you leave it out at room temperature overnight? Or did you put them with the buns in the refrigerator?
Also, the topping is used to glaze the top surface of the bun is it?

For added yumminess use ham and chedder or american cheese, and add a touch of brown sugar and mustard to the sauce. mmmm. Tastes like those delish sammies you make from the leftover Easter ham that you’ve baked for hours and hours with that wonderful brown sugar glaze! Give it a try…you will love it!

@Marti,
So funny that you just commented on this old recipe! I was putting it into the fridge for dinner tonight as you were commenting! ๐
I’ll give it a try your way next time! Sounds delish!

I had these at a church meeting and had to get the recipe. I have made them many times since then. I too, slice through the whole package of buns at the same time and then layer my other items. I use shaved ham as it is easier to cut through after baking. Also, the butter mixture I pour over the meat and cheese before placing the tops back on the sandwiches and then put the rest over the top of the sandwiches before baking them. Make sure before you take them somewhere you have a copy of the recipe in your pocket because I promise someone will ask for the recipe before the party is over.

These are the easiest most wonderful quick I need a dish to carry somewhere. I noticed that some say the sauce goes on before the top bun. The one I have made for years you pour it over the top of the bun, seems to work either way. Fix anyway and Enjoy!!

My Mom has been making these since the 60’s. My wife is making them tonight for the Steelers game (vs 49ers on MNF… go Steelers) and I went online to see if I could find a calorie count on them. Anyway, to answer Jan, the sauce goes on top of the cheese, not on top of the bun.
Mom used to use cheap hamburger buns instead of the Hawaian bread, although that sounds good. Also, she would bake them individually wrapped in aluminum foil to make them crispier. Enjoy!

I made these today for the UF football game and my family loved them! They were so easy to make too. I substituted sesame seeds for poppy seeds just cause thats what we had on hand. Thank you for this recipe, its definitely a keeper ๐
Jan says
Does the sauce go on the “outside” top of the bun or the “inside” of the bun top?
Julie Gholston says
Put the top of the rolls on and brush the tops with the buttery sauce.
Kelly says
These sandwiches are easy and quick and taste great! Real crowd pleaser!

I thought it was about time I said thank you for this recipe. The “sauce” turns an ordinary sandwich into something special. I’ve made my own version many times over the last year or so. Never having rolls on hand I just use regular bread and pour/spread the topping on to the top of the assembled sandwich. We love onions so I use 2 T of them, and cut the Worcestershire down to 1 T.
P.S. I love the name! When I’m ready to make them I hop on the internet and search for “hot and melty ham and cheese” and come right here. ๐
Bev says
Do I understand you put the sauce on TOP of the BUN? Not on the ham and cheese inside and then place the bun on top? In the photo it does not look like there is a sauce ON the bread. ? Thanks. Bev
terry says
can these be cooked and served cold or room temp? thank you
Lisa says
@terry, I made a few pans of these for my daughters 2nd birthday and they started out warm, obviously, but were just as fantastic at room temp. I personally LOVE melty cheese so I wouldn’t get them cold. But, I don’t think it would hurt them any…
