Fry sauce is the easiest and tastiest way to dress up a plate of french fries. It’s fabulous on burgers, too!
When I was a kid my parents would dip their french fries in this horrible pink concoction of mayonnaise and ketchup. It seriously grossed me out. I liked mayo, I liked ketchup, but in true kid form, I would throw up if you tried mixing them together for me.
Then I grew up.
I can’t live without fry sauce in my life!
These days, I don’t eat french fries or burgers without my beloved fry sauce. It’s not quite as simple as my parent’s version of equal parts ketchup and mayo, but it’s 10o times better (sorry, mom and dad, but it is!) and I can not get enough of it. My kids are pretty leary of it, but the husband and I gobble it down like it’s going out of style. Circle of life and all that.
This stuff is perfect for dipping your fries in, but it’s so freakin’ amazing on burgers. If we get drive through (which we totally do more often than we should!), I order my burger plain, because no mixture of ketchup and mustard can compare to dipping your burger in fry sauce. It’s slightly sweet, totally creamy, with just a hint of tang from the vinegar.
Can’t stop, won’t stop.
We recently moved to Nebraska (like, days ago) and they have a Freddy’s restaurant there. Have you ever been? Their burgers are simply amazing! But the best part? They have a big ol’ vat of fry sauce. This is the first restaurant I’ve been to that served fry sauce. I think it’s more popular the further west you get, so I’m a little excited about our move to Nebraska now! We might not find much sweet tea, but we have fry sauce! And cinnamon rolls…seriously, Nebraska. WHAT is your deal with cinnamon rolls? They’re everywhere!
Anyway, my fry sauce recipe is super similar to Freddy’s, so if you’re looking for a Freddy’s copycat recipe, give this one a try! You’re going to love it!
Try this fry sauce recipe on anything from fries to burgers to onion rings!

I convinced everyone I know to try this fry sauce……………we kicked it up several notches by adding Franks hot sauce. Not one person has gone back to the simple side of ketchup. Oh and I use cider vinegar,
Cath says
We make a similar sauce to this but add a couple of dashes of Worcestershire sauce instead of vinegar.
Karly says
Sounds yummy!
Jenny Park says
Oh my goodness, I made this sauce with your onion ring recipe and they were AMAZING! *crash*. That was my diet flying out of the window. *swoosh*. Now it’s in outer space and doesn’t exist.
Alicia says
Ha, Jenny, you are hilarious! I think my diet just flew out the window too!
Karly says
Hahaha! Best comment.

I grew up in Utah, and “fry sauce” was just part of the diet there. Now I live in Puerto Rico where “MayoKetchup” is sold in bottles in grocery stores (basically mayo, ketchup, and a bit of garlic). Love the stuff!
@Tammy. Maybe you need to be slightly less sensitive and critical. If it really offends you, find another site. I personally appreciate the humor.
tammy says
I’m sorry but if your giving a food recipe maybe you should leave out the part about “throwing up”…. This is very popular in the east coast. We call it book boom sauce..
Em says
I work at freddy’s and our fry sauce is actually really easy to make, but these ingredients are close, but not exact. And since we make it in huge quantities, here’s the recipe for a huge vat of it, like stated in the story.
2 Gallons of mayonnaise
1 Gallon of Ketchup
1 Cup of Freddy’s seasoning salt, which is what we put on our burgers, and fries.
2 cups of pickle juice
Combine all ingredients in a giant bowl, until smooth, and more runny than chunky.
It seems to really be a hit with all of our guests, so we make 2-3 of these a day.
Enjoy!

Oh my gosh, THANK YOU for that recipe!! So awesome!

Freddy’s rocks! I’m not sure if GI has a Culvers, but their sweet tea might be of your liking. I know this is where my son goes to get it when he comes home for a visit.
Karly says
@Andi,
There isn’t a Culvers in GI, but we did have one back home and I loved it! I think their burgers are pretty similar to Freddy’s, too! ๐
Paula says
My ten – year old daughter whipped this up for us tonight. We were skeptical of the vinegar, but it turned out soooo good! Our new favorite! Thanks!
Karly says
Yay! Glad to hear that! You’ll have to try it on a burger next time – so good!
Shannon Altman says
I love it!!! I’ve been eating my French fries with mayonnaise and ketchup since I was 11 years old in Sarasota florida at Wendy’s…and now I’m 47…crazy I wish i could of been the one to market it..
Melissa says
There is a Culverโs in Kearney, NE!! I live in Sherman County!!ย
Kimberly says
Ha! Here in MI, I grew up thinking of that recipe as homemade Thousand Island Dressing, otherwise known as Burger King’s Big Mac sauce.
I used dill pickle relish instead of vinegar but that will give it a similar acidity.
Karly says
@Kimberly,
Yes, I love this with pickle relish in it! My husband doesn’t like the chunks though. ๐
Sarah Werner says
Yum! I love fry sauce, it’s a staple in our house too. My parents worked at this little place called Big Al’s in tiny little Ashland, Oregon while they were in high school. Big Al’s has the best fry sauce, so I grew up with my parents always making it for us at home. It’s made pretty much the same way yours is except instead of using just plain vinegar, we use pickle juice. It is amazing! ๐
Jann says
Lived in utah several years and love fry sauce and everyone here thinks im nuts. Welcome to Nebraska. Where do you live and where is freddys. Never heard of it.
Karly says
@Jann,
We’re in Grand Island. ๐
Missy says
We have a version of this in Mississippi; it’s called comeback sauce.
Karly says
@Missy,
I’ll have to give that a try!
Carol says
My favorite dipping sauce is equally simple. Mayo and then add Louisiana Hot sauce to taste. This is good on french fries, chicken strips or nougats. My favorite is with fish. No measuring just start with mayo or miracle whip and go from there.
Karly says
@Carol,
I’ll have to try that!
