Fry Sauce is our favorite way to dress up a plate of crispy, hot french fries! Simple to make (just whisk together a few ingredients!) and it’ll keep in the fridge for a week!

Our fry sauce recipe takes french fries to the next level.
As If We Needed Even More Reasons To Eat French Fries
When I was a kid my parents would dip their French fries in this horrible pink concoction of mayonnaise and ketchup. It seriously grossed me out. I liked mayo, I liked ketchup, but in true kid form, I would absolutely never even consider combining the two!
Then I grew up and now it seems as if I just can’t live without fry sauce in my life.
This pink concoction is the stuff dreams are made of. It’s very similar to our smash burger sauce, but more simple in flavor with less seasonings. Both are fabulous on fries, just depends on your mood.
Our fry sauce is not quite as simple as my parent’s version of equal parts ketchup and mayo, but it’s 100 times better (sorry, mom and dad, but it is!) and I can not get enough of it.
My kids are pretty leary of it, but the husband and I gobble it down like it’s going out of style. Circle of life and all that.
Why Choose Our Recipe:
Well Seasoned: Sure, you can make a simple fry sauce with just ketchup and mayo, but the additional seasonings really make the flavors pop here!
Easy: Nothing is easier than a squirt of ketchup with your fries, but this is a close second and a great way to dress up dinner.
Ingredient Notes:
Mayo – You can use any brand of mayonnaise that you like, but you’ll want to start with real mayo and not Miracle Whip. We prefer Kraft mayo.
Ketchup – I’m a Heinz girl through and through! We like this one – made with no HFCS.
Vinegar – I use white distilled vinegar. It packs a big, bold punch and it’s cheap.
Seasoning – Stir some seasoned salt and pepper. I like Lawry’s seasoned salt.
Fries – What would be the point of making fry sauce without some fries? Try this sauce with these air fryer frozen French fries, or these air fryer waffle fries! Also delicious drizzled over a smash burger or as a dip for our onion strings.
How to Make Fry Sauce:
Mix: With only a few ingredients there obviously isn’t a whole lot of complexity to this recipe! Add the mayo, ketchup, and vinegar to a bowl and whisk together with the salt and peppers until it’s all well mixed.
Serve: After mixing together the fry sauce there is only one, obvious thing left to do! You’re going to need some fries. Get to dipping!

I am originally from Utah. There is a fast food place called Arctic Circle. I LOVED their fry sauce. I add some Dijon mustard or horseradish for a kick. I also always add a little pickle juice.
I moved to The Netherlands. The fry (frites) sauce was mayonnaise. One of my favorite places did a fantastic garlic mayo. You could also find places that served peanut sauce and a curry mayo with ketchup and onions called Joppiesaus.
I moved to Minnesota and no one had heard of fry sauce. That just blew me away. I had no idea it was not everywhere.

@Bridget,
Oh, I like the horseradish idea!

Here in Utah fry sauce has been around forever….and is offered in most all the burger places. When I make mine, I mix the ketchup & mayo and add dill pickle juice to give it the tang! Love it on burgers, and with onion rings!

Please don’t think me completely ignorant… but when you say mayo, could you also be saying “Miracle Whip” ? Here where I live, that’s interchangeable, so I just wanted to check before I serve this awesome sauce…
Thanks, and enjoy Nebraska!
Karly says
@Judi,
Hi Judi!
Mayo is just straight up mayo where I’m from. ๐ Miracle Whip is something different, but I DO think you could make this with Miracle Whip. It won’t be the same…much sweeter, but I bet it’d be good!

Have you had your first experience with Cinnamon Rolls and Chili? Seriously so strange, but so delicious. It’s a midwest thing.
Karly says
@Kate,
I see it offered everywhere, but haven’t tried it yet! It just sounds so weird! ๐

When I worked at a drive-in in Idaho, we used Miracle Whip and ketchup. It adds an extra zippiness. We also mixed buttermilk and mayo to make White
Sauce. Now that’s the bomb!!
Karly says
@Kathy,
Hmm, I might need to try that white sauce!

I need this sauce in my life like STAT!

This is awesome Karly. I had heard that fry sauce was a Utah thing. We first had it once we moved to Idaho & I have a serious addiction to it. So happy I don’t have to go around the corner to the fast food place to get it now. Thank you ๐ I think I will be making this in bulk.

Hi Karly, your getting closer to my neck of the woods!
We love fry sauce and yours is darn near identical to mine , I do occasionally add garlic powder.
Believe it or not it is also great as a salad dressing base-add in diced dill pickles and a little mustard and there you go!
Karly says
@Kari/sourdoughnative,
I love it with dill relish, but my husband freaks out when I do that. Haha! I’ll have to try with a squirt of mustard too!

If you are in Lincoln or Omaha, be sure to try Lazlo’s Brewery. Order their fries with creamy garlic sauce. And you’ve definately got to try Runza.
Karly says
@Jan,
We’re not in Omaha, but I’ll check them out if we head out that way! And we had Runza yesterday. I’m not sure what I think yet…need to try the BLT Runza. ๐

Looks just like the secret sauce at Raising Cane’s here in Louisiana! So yummy! So glad I found your blog. ๐

I forgot to mention ! My son in law graduated from University of Nebraska at Lincoln as well !! I will have to tell them of your website and how you live in Nebraska now !

My daughter graduated from University of Nebraska at Lincoln. My son in law is from Lexington. You must try a place called Bison Burgers !! It was my favorite place to eat when we travelled up from Corpus Christi, Texas. Our town is known for Whataburger, where you can order your burger any way you like it , 24 hours a day. You can have it at breakfast, lunch or dinner or any of the other menu items .
Karly says
@Liz,
I’ve had Whataburger once when I was down in Alabama! Loved it! ๐
Becky @ lovetobeinthekitchen says
It’s so funny to me people aren’t familiar with fry sauce because everyone in Utah grew up with it! My family LOVES fry sauce! We make it all the time but I’ve never added vinegar to it before. I’ll have to try that!

Thank you and Happy Monday.

Before I saw this post, I spent an hour last night standing in the kitchen whipping up my favorite dipping sauce–my friends call it ‘miracle sauce’ because it has a great creaminess and mystery mix of flavors nobody can pinpoint (except as being miraculous), but it involves mayo, BBQ sauce, sweet thai chili sauce, and just a smidge of honey and/or vinegar. Perfect creamy dip; I am a total dips-as-main-dish person (i.e. if I’m the only person who’s going to be eating it, I usually give it a few good mixings so I can lick the spoon–mix, lick, repeat!), so this fry sauce is coming up next. Thanks for sharing!
Karly says
@Ala,
Oh, I might have to experiment with that! Sounds good!
