Perfectly seasoned rice baked in the oven!
Onion Soup + Rice Makes The Most Flavorful Side Dish!
Admittedly, we make a lot of rice in our house. I’m talking multiple times a week between the Instant Pot Mexican rice and our rice pilaf.
Then you throw in this saucy little number? With a half of a stick of butter and a packet of french onion soup? Maybe a little sprinkle of cheese for good measure?
Yeah. It’s rice for dinner. On repeat.
Our French Onion Soup Rice is doing all the things we love:
1.) Super savory and flavorful.
2.) Weeknight ready with just 5 ingredients that you stir together and bake.
3.) Kid-approved (especially if you leave out the word onion when describing the recipe) thanks to the big flavor and sprinkle of cheese.
Bonus: Shred up a rotisserie chicken or use our crockpot shredded chicken and stir it right in with the rice before baking. You have yourself a comfort food meal. Serve a vegetable on the side. Or don’t. I’m not your mom.
♥ What We Love About This Recipe:
- Flavors: This isn’t your standard rice recipe! This rice is extra flavorful thanks to being cooked in French onion soup, beef broth, and butter. That’s a lot of savory goodness.
- Cheesy: In addition to all that other flavor there is the creamy, cheesy topping! We top the rice with gruyere cheese while the rice is still hot from the oven so it gets nice and melty.
- Versatile: This side dish is easy to stir together and bake and it goes great with just about any protein! Perfect for any meal.
Ingredient Notes:
White Rice – I’m using regular long grain white rice for this recipe. You can use any variety you like such as basmati or jasmine rice. Just don’t use instant rice or brown rice as they will not work.
French Onion Soup – This recipe is nice and simple when you start with a can of condensed French onion soup.
Beef Broth – We’re also adding some beef broth! It’ll get soaked into the rice along with the soup to add more of the savory flavor. Use low sodium broth if you’re sensitive to salt.
Butter – For topping the rice dish when baking. It’ll melt into the rice to add some buttery flavor to the mix.
Gruyere Cheese – We love the flavor of gruyere, but you can use swiss or mozzarella if that’s what you have on hand.
Minced Parsley – For garnish.
See the recipe card for full information on ingredients and quantities.
Step by Step:
Preheat the oven to 425 and add the rice, onion soup, and beef broth a 9×9 baking dish.
Slice the butter into pats and arrange them over the rice. Cover the dish tightly with foil.
Bake for 30 minutes and then remove the foil and continue baking for another 30 minutes.
Sprinkle the cheese over the rice and let it sit for about 5 minutes to get nice and melty. Sprinkle on the parsley and dig in.
Helpful Tip!
Freezing & Storage Instructions:
If you’ve got leftovers you can keep the French onion rice stored in an airtight container in your refrigerator for up to 4 days. It can be reheated in the microwave or the oven.
It is possible to freeze this rice recipe. Let it cool before transferring to a freezer safe container or bag. It can be stored for up to a few months. Thaw overnight in the fridge before reheating.
Recipe FAQs:
It’s pretty much exactly what it sounds like! Rice cooked in savory French onion soup and topped with creamy, melty gruyere cheese. It’s a great combination of flavors that’s perfect for dinner!
Stick to a long grain white rice for this recipe. You can use varieties like basmati or jasmine if you have a preference but don’t use instant rice or brown rice as they will not work well in this recipe.
We love the classic, nutty flavor of gruyere cheese on this savory rice. Mozzarella, Parmesan, and Swiss are also tasty, more likely to be stocked at home, and are often more budget-friendly.

Girl, I do NOT know how you are surviving this. There is a chance that we will move back into student housing in the fall and even though it is WAY cheaper than where we’re living, I am debating eating the price just so I don’t have to pack. And move. And have my whole life turned upside down.
Erin @ Miss Scrambled Egg says
What are the chances of having an opportunity to move literally fall into your lap. Congratulations! Hopefully, this will be the last time that you’ll have to move again. This rice looks like the perfect meal on it’s own. Love it.

Oh, Karly — I feel for you moving again, but getting your dream house and not moving again has to be highly motivating. ๐ I’ll bet your family loves quick dinner nights — this rice looks fantastic and I can’t wait to make it!

Yes, super motivating! ๐
Thanks, Marcie!
Connie says
Moving again?! I’ve moved twice (the first time was relatively painless because I was moving out of my parents home and basically only had clothing, makeup and hair tools, a TV and DVD player). Moving after getting married from an apartment into a house was a lot of work! Hope this will be your last move and goes smoothly.
Now, for the rice. Looks delicious. What’s there not to like about rice that is thrown together, baked in the oven and is savory and cheesy?! I would probably eat a big bowl of it for dinner as the main entree ๐
Aimee @ ShugarySweets says
Dude I grew up on something very similar, and I have been thinking about it. Totally making this for family dinner tonight!!
Katrina @ In Katrina's Kitchen says
