This edible sugar cookie dough is safe to eat straight from the bowl! Our eggless cookie dough is made with heat treated flour for a safe to eat dough that no one can resist.
There tends to be two types of people…those who live on the edge and eat the raw cookie dough and those who patiently and safely wait for the cookie dough to be baked.
I’ve always been a rebel, especially when it comes to cookie dough, so you’ll find me with a face full of cookie dough and not a worry in the world. 😉
But, I decided to make a safe to eat edible sugar cookie dough recipe for the rule followers.
While my perfect chocolate chip cookies are our favorite cookies to bake, sugar cookie dough is our favorite dough to eat. This cookie dough frosting is a verrrrry close second.

Sugar – We’re using granulated white sugar here.
Flour – This is actually the ingredient most likely to get you sick from raw cookie dough, but we have an easy trick to make it safe!
Vanilla – You could also use almond extract if you prefer that in your sugar cookies.
Sprinkles – These are optional but definitely fun to mix in. See below for more suggestions on other mix-ins or toppings you could use!
Why We Love This Edible Sugar Cookie Dough Recipe!
What isn’t there to love about cookie dough? I guess the part where you might get sick if you eat it raw…not with this one! Obviously we love that you can just eat this as a snack or dessert any time with no worries, but it’s also a really simple recipe that can be made in little time that just about everyone is sure to enjoy.
How to Make Edible Cookie Dough:
Prepare: First up you’ll want to make sure everything is safe and santitary by pasteurizing the flour for this recipe. Spread the flour onto a rimmed baking sheet and bake it in a pre-heated oven for five minutes to kill any bacteria.
This, along with not using any eggs, will ensure your sugar cookie dough is safe and edible! Let the flour cool completely before moving on.
Helpful Tip!
Use the Microwave!
Don’t want to heat up the whole oven just to bake the flour? You can microwave it for 1 minute. Just use a thermometer to check that the flour reaches 160 degrees and don’t overcook the flour. This method isn’t as fool proof as the oven, but it is a time saver.
Mix: This recipe is so simple because it only takes a few ingredients to make the sugar cookie dough and there isn’t a whole lot to it except for some mixing.
Start by adding the sugar and butter to a mixing bowl. Beat those together in the bowl with an electric mixer until it is smooth and creamy.
Not much left to this step, just add in the vanilla, milk, flour and salt and combine those with the sugar and butter mixture! This really is a very simple cookie dough recipe.
You can stop here or you can grab your favorite jar of sprinkles and dump some in. We never say no to sprinkles in this house.
Serve: You’re ready to eat! You can scoop out individual portions and serve the sugar cookie dough now or cover it and chill in the fridge until you are ready for a snack or a dessert later!
Try serving this edible sugar cookie dough with your favorite flavor of ice cream! It’s an easy mix in.
Edible Sugar Cookie Dough Toppings & Mix-Ins
This edible cookie dough can be enjoyed as is or you can customize it with all your favorite mix-ins or toppings. We like to keep it simple with sprinkles but consider trying some of these other options:
Chocolate – Classic and easy! Semisweet, milk chocolate, dark chocolate, or even white chocolate chips will all work fine here. Mini chocolate chips are probably the best choice here.
Candy – My favorite would be mini M&Ms but just about anything works here. Reese’s Pieces are another great choice. Any small candies, or crushed or chopped candies are a good choice.
Cookies – Adding cookies to cookie dough seems kind of redundant. Don’t let that stop you! Use a couple of cookies with this as a filling to make a killer sandwich cookie.
Other – Mini marshmallows, peanut butter chips, all varieties of sprinkles, Graham crackers, and just about anything else you can think of will be great mixed in!
FAQs:
Flour can contain bacteria. That’s generally not a problem because flour usually ends up being baked which renders it safe to eat. It’s important to pre-bake the flour to kill off any bacteria.
It’s mostly due to the egg and the uncooked flour which both can contain harmful bacteria. That’s why this recipe skips the egg and why it is important to pre-bake the flour!
Pretty much, yes! A discerning palate might detect a bit of a difference from the lack of egg and addition of milk, but for the most part no one will realize. If you like raw cookie dough you’ll certainly enjoy this recipe, and it’ll be safe too.
Nope, this dough is meant to be eaten raw. It doesn’t have any eggs or leavening agents added, so the end result would be less than desirable.
Yep! It’s best kept in the refrigerator in an airtight container where it should last up to a week, or up to a couple of months if you are freezing it.
