Crockpot chicken and gravy is a simple comfort food favorite in our house! Toss everything into your slow cooker and walk away. The gravy makes itself in the slow cooker and the chicken turns out so juicy and tender.
We love cozy crockpot meals, especially when they’re as easy as this crockpot chicken and gravy – made with just 5 ingredients and less than 5 minutes of prep!
This recipe reminds me a bit of our creamy crockpot chicken and noodles – just without the noodles! It’s tender, shredded chicken floating in a rich gravy. The whole dish is just begging to be served over a pile of our Instant Pot mashed potatoes or some Amish egg noodles!
This crockpot chicken and gravy definitely qualifies as comfort food and it’s one of the easiest things ever to make! You’re going to love the creamy garlic gravy and tender chicken. This one is hard to beat!

This recipe calls for just 5 ingredients:
Chicken – I’m using boneless, skinless chicken breasts – but chicken thighs would also work, if you prefer them!
Cream of Chicken Soup – You can use the canned kind or follow the link to try out my substitute cream of chicken soup recipe! It’s so much better than the canned kind and you can use it in lots of recipes.
Chicken Gravy Mix – This is found with the chili, taco, and gravy mixes and sold in a packet.
Garlic – Mince your own or use the kind in a jar.
Parsley – Fresh chopped parsley brightens it up.

Top: Place the chicken in the crockpot and spread the cream of chicken mixture over the top.
Slow Cook: Cover your slow cooker and turn to high for 3 hours or low for 5 hours. Shred the chicken or serve it in whole pieces.
Helpful Tips!
- You may substitute chicken thighs for chicken breasts, if you prefer.
- Every slow cooker cooks differently – some run hotter than others. This slow cooker chicken and gravy recipe will cook on low in about 5 hours or on high in 3 hours in most slow cookers.
- When the chicken shreds easily, it’s done!
Serve: This slow cooker chicken and gravy is shown over a pile of mashed potatoes and that’s our favorite way to serve it. You can also serve this over our rice pilaf!
Dress it Up!
This recipe is simple and perfect just as it is, but feel free to get creative and mix in mushrooms, peas, or carrots for some extra nutrition.
FAQ:
You sure can. After adding your seasonings and a couple of cans of cream of chicken soup, cover your slow cooker and turn to high for 3 hours or low for 5 hours.
There is no need to flip your chicken over in a slow cooker. It will cook tender and evenly while you carry on with the other tasks of your day!
This is not a requirement for a chicken and gravy recipe. Some people like to sear it before putting it in a crockpot to try and keep the meat more tender. For our recipe, the speed we cook at, as well as the gravy ingredients, will keep the chicken plenty tender!
If you have leftover crockpot chicken and gravy you can keep it stored in the fridge in an airtight container for about 4-5 days.

We eat chicken frequently and I’m always on the lookout for new recipes that use chicken.
However, why shred the chicken?
I will make this recipe using Progresso Cream of Mushroom Soup, as it is Gluten Free, my husband is Gluten Intolerant (I have not seen a cream of chicken soup that is GF) there are GF packets of chicken gravy which I will use, and I’ll just cook the boneless chicken breasts until they are tender and reach 165-170 degrees. I’ll serve it with Bob Evans or store brand already mashed potatoes and a green veggie. If we are really hungry, I may add a green salad.
Karly says
We shred the chicken so that you’re getting chicken, gravy, and mashed potatoes/noodles in every bite. It’s just our preference.

Making this today, cold day in Michigan. I have a question though. In the text it says cook 3 hrs. on high or 5 hrs. on low. In the recipe it says 4 hrs. high or 8 hrs. low. Big difference between 5 and 8 hrs.
Karly says
Oh sorry about that! Follow the instructions in the recipe card. ๐

I used your recipe to make the soup and this was a hit! My daughters donโt like canned cream soups – thanks for sharing a great substitute!
Karly says
Thanks for sharing, Donna! So glad to hear that!
Carla G Skidmore says
Hi Donna, oh, dear, kids and their preferences. I go what my childhood neighbor whom everyone adored. She and her husband had four daughters. She had been an RN, as I had been, and she told her girls this, “If you do not like what is served, you do not have to eat it, but there is no more food until morning when breakfast is served.” They soon learned to at least try what was served and they actually ended up liking it.
Peggy says
I think this would be good over biscuits !
Karly says
Great idea!

Can you put the chicken in the crockpot frozen? Thank you
Karly says
I haven’t tried this one with frozen chicken. Not sure how well it would work.
Lynne Merrifield says
This recipe was so easy to make. I used a little more than 3lbs of chicken and should have used 1 more can of soup. I don’t like pepper so left that out and used a little poultry seasoning instead. Served it over mashed potatoes and over rice the next day. Think I’ll add some mushrooms next time.
Karly says
Glad you enjoyed the recipe, Lynne! ๐

Added sauteed mushrooms with soup mix and peas and carrots after shredding the meat. Served over egg noodles. OMG!!!
Karly says
Sounds delicious! ๐

Going to PIN this and make it for my husband but will have to make some changes as we do low carb. You might want to recalculate your nutrition as there is no way this recipe is only 1 carb as the chicken soup itself has at least 8 carbs per can. Also would be helpful to have how much a serving size is, such as 1 cup etc., as most families do not have 8 members they are feeding at a time. This way it can be measured out and leftovers packed away for another meal.

Hi Karly, Can I use stuffing instead of mashed potatoes?
Karly says
You can put over anything you like. Stuffing sounds good. ๐

This was so easy to make but itโs so salty. ย Too much sodium for me.
Danielle DiNapoli says
Hi! I’d love to make this recipe but I don’t have a Crockpot. I do have an Instant Pot – do you have any recommendations for how to modify it for the Instant Pot? Thank you!
Karly says
Hi Danielle! I haven’t tried this one in the Instant Pot. There wouldn’t be enough liquid as it is to get it to pressure, so you’d probably want to add a cup of broth, but then your gravy will be a lot thinner. You could use the slow cook function on the IP.

I am making this recipe today, it is not that cold, but the weather is damp, rainy and raw.
I did make one substitute, as I am not shredding the boneless chicken breast “tenders.” I used a gluten-free gravy as my husband is gluten intolerant. McCormick makes a delicious G.F. gravy and we both love the Bob Evans Mashed Potatoes, I may never peel another potato! The green veggie choice will be either peas or broccoli.
