Crockpot Chicken and Dumplings is a favorite in our house. It’s easy to throw the ingredients in your slow cooker and when you come back you’ll have a big bowl of comfort food ready for you. We like lots of dumplings and this recipe doesn’t disappoint!
I am definitely one of those people that is happy to eat soup all year long, but when fall and winter roll around, I really amp it up.
Soups. All day every day. Is there anything more warming, filling, and comforting than a hot bowl of soup?
I’m pretty fond of my chicken gnocchi soup, but my son’s favorite is chicken and dumplings.
This easy crockpot chicken and dumplings recipe makes my life so much simpler. I use canned biscuit dough for the dumplings which makes the recipe go so quick, but it still tastes like those classic chicken and dumplings everyone loves.
While we absolutely love my dad’s homemade biscuits and our 7 Up Biscuits, we use canned in this recipe. They make life so easy sometimes!
If you prefer rolled dumplings, you should try our Cracker Barrel chicken and dumplings. Such a good copycat recipe.
How to make crockpot chicken dumplings:
We’re keeping this recipe super easy and convenient because we all need easy and convenient comfort food some days, right?
You’re going to start with a couple of pounds of chicken breast (or thighs, if you prefer!) in a slow cooker.
Add some onions, garlic, and cream of chicken soup to the slow cooker. You can use my homemade cream of chicken soup substitute if you don’t like to purchase the canned stuff.
Pour in some chicken broth and season everything with poultry seasoning, parsley, and pepper. Add a bit of salt if you’re using homemade cream of chicken soup, but if you use the canned stuff, you can probably skip it.
Give everything a quick stir and the cover the slow cooker.
You’ll want to cook this on low for about 7 hours or on high for 3 hours.
When the chicken is nice and tender and cooked through, use a couple of forks to shred the meat and give everything a good stir.
Open up a can of biscuits and press the dough into flat rounds. Use a sharp knife or pizza cutter to cut the dough into narrow strips and drop those into the crockpot. Give it quick stir and then cover the pot and cook for another hour.
After an hour, the biscuits should be soft and fluffy. Some slow cookers take longer to cook than others, so you may have to adjust a bit depending on your slow cooker.
That’s it! Serve this up in a big bowl or over a pile of mashed potatoes. Either way, these chicken and dumplings are oh so good!

Can I use frozen chicken with this recipe? I’ve only ever used thawed chicken.
Karly Campbell says
I’m sure you could, but it’ll take longer to cook. Should be around 6-8 hours on low or 4-6 on high to get the chicken cooked through and shreddable. 🙂
Diane says
Don’t stir the mix after you put the biscuit dough in. I made that mistake and although it tasted good, it was kind of a mess.
Krystina says
Would cream of mushroom work if I don’t have cream of chicken? I want to make this for dinner tonight I grew up on chicken and dumplings and want to try get my son to try something new.
Karly says
Yes, for sure! Hope you enjoy!
Riley says
I forgot to flatten my biscuits… now what??
Karly says
They’ll likely take longer to cook through.

This is my GO TO recipe for chicken and dumplings 🙂 Turns out every time!! Delicious!! Thank you!!

I’m about to have knee surgery and making “freezer meals” ahead of time. Can this be frozen and reheated on warm or low in a crockpot or in the microwave?
Karly says
Hi Debbie! I’ve never tried freezing this one, but I think it would likely work fine. I’d probably thaw in the fridge and reheat in the microwave.

Making this for dinner! Reading the comments, some people said it comes out soupy? Can the juice be used as a gravy or would it need thickened up to put over potatoes??
Karly says
Hello! This is a soup recipe, but it is thicker than something like a traditional chicken noodle soup. I’m not sure it’s quite as thick as gravy, but you could try thickening it if you wanted to serve it that way.

My family loved the Chicken & Dumplings and because it came out with a bit more liquid than I expected, I decided to call it Chicken & Dumpling Stew. The flavor was to die for and the idea of making dumplings out of canned biscuit dough was genius!!! This recipe was so easy. I cooked it on HIGH as directed but noticed that your recipe for Chicken & Stuffing is cooked on LOW with almost the same amount of chicken and time as the Chicken & Dumplings. The Stuffing one is cooking in the crock pot now and I hope it will be done in 3 & 1/2 hrs as stated on the LOW setting. But anyway, just to let you know, the Chicken & Dumplings were wonderful

I love this recipe, have used it several times, yet my biscuits seem to not cook through all the way. They always still seem doughy.

It’s a keeper! I made this tonight and my husband and I loved it. My husband is from the Midwest and always raves about his sister cooking, well this one hit it out of the park with him and I’ve added it into the rotation. I did add a can of corn and made the dumplings from Bisquick…everything was delish!!!
Rosemary says
The biscuits are mushy after an hour on the slow cooker setting on my Instant Pot. I’m letting it cook longer n sauté for a few minutes so the liquid boils.
Karly says
The Instant Pot slow cooker does cook differently than other slow cookers, as well as the shape being different – not as much surface space so the biscuits probably are mushed together. Hopefully the saute mode helped. 🙂

This was awesome and super simple! I am definitely adding this to my meal planning routine!

I make chicken & dumplings similitude to your recipe. I try different things sometimes. I normally use about 3 cans of biscuits in mine. And probably use more water. I use a whole cooked chicken. If I cook the chicken myself , I use the chicken broth I cooked it in. But if I buy a rotisserie cooked chicken, I just take the meat off the bones & add to water. I do add the cream of chicken soup & chicken broth. I will modify my recipe to yours & see how it goes. I haven’t normally added chicken broth in the past.

Made this tonight and we really enjoyed it! The flavor was good and it was really simple. Will definitely make it again.
Karly says
Love to hear that! Thanks, Liz!
Elena says
It’s a great recipe, doesn’t look like a soup, though, but I copied it to do it when we are going to do a soup….
Question: Can I do my own dumplings and throw them to the casserole?
Karly says
Hi Elena!
You can make your own dumplings, but I’m not sure if you’ll need to make other changes. We’ve only tested this with the canned biscuit dough.
Crystal says
This is a great recipe! Can I make one suggestion? Before putting biscuits in the crockpot pat with a little bit of flour, and then cut them.
Nina says
I’m making this the night before for my husband’s Christmas potluck at work. Is it ok on warm reheated…does it mess with the consistency of the dumplings or dry out you think? Thanks!
Karly says
It should reheat fine! You may need to add additional liquid when reheating as it will thicken up as it sits.
Kayla says
I have a 4quart slow cooker would all the ingredients fit?
Karly says
I’m not sure if they would or not.
Abriel says
Question…. Can I use frozen chicken?
Karly says
Yes, I think so! Just make sure the chicken is cooked through and shreddable before you add the biscuit dough. It’ll likely take longer than stated.
Momma says
What kind of biscuits did you use?
Karly says
We use the flaky layers biscuits, but any of them should work fine.
