So, my son? He had his first date a couple of weeks ago.
I will do my very best not to embarrass him here, because his cute little girlfriend might read this blog. All I will say is this: I cried harder after dropping him off at his date than I did on his first day of kindergarten.
I’m talking a full on ugly cry, you guys. It was ridiculous.
So, after the tears stopped, I obviously needed chocolate.
This ridiculous concoction worked miraculously. It’s one of the easiest recipes you’ll ever make and it’s absolutely loaded with chocolate. And just look at how fudgy it is! I die.
I know it’s the holiday season and we’re all in cookie mode, but take a 2 minute break to mix this up and pop it in the oven as a treat for your family. It’s perfect for busy days, because you just dump and bake.
If you can’t handle the idea of cake without frosting, maybe try this topped with my whipped icing!
Chocolate Pudding Dump Cake
Ingredients
- 1 box chocolate cake mix
- 1 small box instant chocolate pudding
- 1 1/2 cups milk
- 1 1/2 cups chocolate chips
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- Combine the dry cake mix, dry pudding mix, and milk in a bowl and mix until combined.
- Spread into a greased 9x13 baking dish.
- Top with the chocolate chips and bake for 30 minute or until the edges pull away from the pan.
- Cool before cutting and serving.

Combined and cooked as directed and served with whipped cream for my book club who had just read Hillbilly Elegy. A dump cake recipe was just the thing! It was just ok. No one asked for the recipe. Kinda dry. Didn’t rise much. Thick taste.

Hello! I made this cake a couple weeks ago with several pudding snack cups, eyeballed the amount and it turned out great!! If I wanted to make it in a jelly roll pan, will a single batch work? Or should I do a 1 1/2 batch! Thanks for the recipe!ย
Karly says
I’ve not made this in a jelly roll pan, so I can’t say.

Is the center supposed to be flat and really moist? I baked it until the sides were pulling away from the pan, but it still tastes under cooked.
Karly says
It won’t puff up at all…it’s more dense like a brownie. As for moist, yes, it should be moist, but it shouldn’t be underdone. The center should be set, for sure. Hope that helps!

I made this last week and my family loved it. Today I am going to try chocolate cake and vanilla pudding. Thanks for this easy recipe!

What a lifesaver! I was called on last minute to bring a dessert to men’s homeless shelter for tonight. I had all ingredients for three cakes. So glad I found this. Thanks!

This sounds amazing – but don’t have instant pudding mix, just the kind that has to be cooked. Can I use it?
Karly says
I haven’t tried it myself, so I’m not sure how that would work out.

I have made this with ‘cookable’ pudding. Just prepare the pudding with the 2 C milk just as it says on the box in a large pan. Dump in the dry cake mix and follow the rest of the directions above.

Made this and it was wonderful, but I mixed it with a hand mixer which didn’t seem strong enough to do the job — was really wheezing by the end. Also had the puff-up around the edges and sinking in the middle (I guess from the weight of the choc chips, except I went heavy on the chips around the edge the next time, and still happened.) Then tried an alternative: spice cake mix, butterscotch instant pudding, and butterscotch bits — also excellent and I’m trying peanut butter chips instead of the butterscotch bits next time for an even greater meld of flavors. Thanks for this terrific snack/dessert idea!

Sounds great! And I think I will try pecan cake mix with butterscotch chips too. I’m sitting here thinking of different combinations of cake mix and pudding, and I don’t need any of them!!LOL

This cake seems super easy and yummy, but it is not a dump cake. Why? Because you have to mix the ingredients before pouring into pan. You should just take the word “dump” out of the name. Just saying.

Thank you. I just made it and they do indeed stay on top. I also added some mint baking chips to the top and it is fantastic. One problem I had was that the batter sunk under all that weight of the chocolate and mint chips. The edge all around the cake grew high, but the center kept falling as the cake cooled. Slightly mushy. But I guess that’s why its called a dump cake. I told my wife I want to try this again with walnuts added. Sort of like a brownie.????
