So, my son? He had his first date a couple of weeks ago.
I will do my very best not to embarrass him here, because his cute little girlfriend might read this blog. All I will say is this: I cried harder after dropping him off at his date than I did on his first day of kindergarten.
I’m talking a full on ugly cry, you guys. It was ridiculous.
So, after the tears stopped, I obviously needed chocolate.
This ridiculous concoction worked miraculously. It’s one of the easiest recipes you’ll ever make and it’s absolutely loaded with chocolate. And just look at how fudgy it is! I die.
I know it’s the holiday season and we’re all in cookie mode, but take a 2 minute break to mix this up and pop it in the oven as a treat for your family. It’s perfect for busy days, because you just dump and bake.
If you can’t handle the idea of cake without frosting, maybe try this topped with my whipped icing!
Chocolate Pudding Dump Cake
Ingredients

- 1 1/2 cups milk
- 1 1/2 cups chocolate chips
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- Combine the dry cake mix, dry pudding mix, and milk in a bowl and mix until combined.
- Spread into a greased 9x13 baking dish.
- Top with the chocolate chips and bake for 30 minute or until the edges pull away from the pan.
- Cool before cutting and serving.

Do the chocolate chips stay on top when baked, or do they settle on the bottom?
Another web site with the same recipe says to coat the chips in the cake mix so they don’t sink. This give me the impression that they do sink.
Karly says
@walter,
I had no problem with them staying on top. The batter is thick. But, if they do sink you can always sprinkle more on just before pulling them out of the oven. Never too much chocolate! ๐

This is very similiar (but rises high due to the eggs) – was on a box of cake mix when I was a kid in the 60’s.
Fast Fixin’ Chocolate Cake
Ingredients
1 box Devil’s Food Cake mix
1/4 cup oil
2 eggs
1 1/4 cups water
1 package (4 servings) Chocolate Instant Pudding mix
1 cup chocolate chips (6 oz. Pkg)
Instructions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Pour oil into a 13X9X2 inch pan. Tilt pan until bottom is covered with oil. Put remaining ingredients into pan; stir with a fork or spoon until well blended (about 2 minutes).
Scrape sides and spread batter evenly in pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 35-45 minutes until a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean.
There was also one (on the same box) with alternates:
Fast Fixin’ Cherry Cake
Substitute while cake mix for Devil’s food
Substitute vanilla pudding for chocolate
Substitute 1 can cherry pie filling for chocolate chips.
(may take a little longer to bake w/the extra moisture from the pie filling) I seem to remember we cut down the water the 2nd time we made the cherry one.
Just thought I would share as it would give you some alternates!

Has anyone tried making this with sugar-free instant pudding? That’s all I have on hand and I don’t want to make a run to Wally World to get the regular stuff because I’ll end up buying a bunch of other crap and forget the pudding mix.
Karly says
I haven’t tried it, but I imagine it would work fine.
Kay says
Is that instant pudding mix or cook and serve?
Karly says
Instant!
Laura says
Are you using semi-sweet or milk chocolate chips?
Karly says
You can use either, but I’m using milk chocolate. My family doesn’t like semi-sweet. They want lots and lots of sugar. ๐
Katie says
so you dont have to put eggs or oil in for the chocolate cake mix ? cause i know normally when you make cake thats what you need for it
Karly says
Nope, just the dry mix! ๐
Thelma Clarke says
Do you use regular pudding or instant?
Karly says
I use the instant dry powder.
Jenny says
Can this recipe be baked in something else (bundt pan) and still turn out as wonderful as it sounds?
Karly says
I would think that it would work fine, though I’ve never tried it in anything other than a 9×13.
