My mama’s chocolate frosting recipe has been a favorite of my family’s for as long as a I can remember! Just be warned – you’ll all be fighting over who gets to lick the bowl!
Alright, y’all. Brace yourselves. I am about to share with you the most fudgy, delicious, amazing chocolate frosting recipe that you will ever eat in your life. (I know I promised to share this recipe a few days ago, but life has been crazy this week. I apologize.)
My mama used to make this homemade chocolate frosting and pour it on homemade brownies. I’m not a fan of frosted brownies (the frosting does something funky to the texture of the brownie, in my opinion), but I had no problem scraping the frosting off with my teeth and tossing the brownie in the trash.
No shame in my game, friends.
I can remember my mom making this, standing at the stove and counting to 60, making sure that the milk and sugar boiled for exactly 60 seconds. I’m not sure what would happen if it boiled for 61 seconds, or heaven forbid, 62 seconds. My mama took the 60 second rule very seriously. So do I, and so should you. Don’t mess with perfection.
This chocolate fudge frosting is worth every single second. It’s seriously amazing.
I also remember that my parents always let my brother and me lick the bowl when they made brownies or cakes, but when it came to this frosting, it was a family event. The kids had to share with the parents.
Have I convinced you to try this yet?
Put it on brownies if you’re a frosted brownie kinda gal (or guy) or use it to frost doughnuts like I did. This isn’t a frosting that you would pipe. It’s thin and pourable, but it hardens up very quickly into a fudge like texture. In fact, I plan on experimenting with this soon to see if I can turn it into fudge. I imagine it would be divine.
If you’re really desperate for a little chocolate, but don’t feel like baking, go ahead and make a 1/4 batch of this chocolate fudge frosting and eat it with a spoon. It’ll make you happy. Trust me. I know.

Could you use dark chocolate chips?
Karly says
Sure, if you want a less sweet frosting. ๐
Victoria K. says
You can also just combine cream with chocolate chips. Melt them together and make ganache.
Karly says
I love ganache! This is pretty different tasting though. ๐

Can def be turned into fudge. After boiling best with a mixer for about 10 to 12 minutes.

Bel says
Sorry to be really British here, but by ‘white sugar’ do you mean caster sugar, granulated or icing sugar? I’d love to try this recipe, sounds delicious!
Dacia D says
I was going to ask the same thing–granulated or powdered sugar? They are both white! lol

i thought i followed the recipe explicitly – but not sure what kind of a boil we were looking for – a rolling boil like a pot of boiling water for pasta? i didn’t think so i waited until the perimeter of the pot started to boil – set my microwave timer for 60 seconds – removed from heat and added chips – they never fully melted – so i the pot onto a very small heat and stirred and stirred until the chips melted – but it never hardened – never – it was like a ganache more than a frosting. can you let me know what i did wrong? i really wanted it to work – i loved your posting and it sounded like exactly what i wanted.
Skye says
I had the same exact problem! It never harden, the chocolate never melted all the way, it was super runny still.
Karly says
Hi Skye! The boiling sugar should melt the chocolate chips, but if not you can always return to a low heat in short bursts while whisking to get it melted. It is definitely very liquid while hot, but it should firm up as it cools.
Ashley says
Ooo this looks delicious. I never put frosting on brownies but this is making me think I should.
Erica Lea says
Eating it with a spoon sounds REAL good.
shelly (cookies and cups) says

This is the recipe my mom uses too! It’s THE BEST frosting ever. Every year growing up I had a chocolate cake with this chocolate frosting. I’m extremely picky regarding my frosting!

Looks heavenly. I don’t mess with perfection either. If it says 60 seconds, 60 seconds it will be!
