This CHOCOLATE GRAVY RECIPE is like pouring a warm chocolate pudding over the top of your biscuits. What a treat!
Alright, I know you’ve all heard of biscuits and gravy…the traditional kind with a white gravy and bits of sausage?
(Here’s my sausage gravy recipe, if you’ve never tried this for breakfast!)
But what about chocolate gravy?
I know, I know…if you’re used to sausage gravy then chocolate gravy maybe sounds a bit…well…gross.
You just have to trust me!
There’s not much better than a warm homemade biscuit topped with thick, creamy chocolate gravy.
What is chocolate gravy?
Chocolate gravy is a very unique type of gravy that is typically served in the American South. It is most commonly served with fresh homemade biscuits for a special breakfast!
The gravy can be made several different ways. The typical method uses flour, cocoa powder, butter, and sugar.
It’s quick, simple, and the kids absolutely go crazy for it.
Ingredients:
This is a simple recipe without a lot of ingredients, which means that we want all of the components to be the best they can be.
Butter: We use salted. If you use unsalted, just add a touch more salt to the finished gravy.
My Favorite Cocoa Powder!
This cocoa powder is Dutch-processed, giving it a rich, deep flavor and color. Hershey’s brand is inexpensive and easy to find.
Cocoa Powder: Both natural and Dutch-processed cocoa work well here. We prefer Hershey’s Special Dark for the deep, rich color and flavor.
Milk: Whole milk is best, but 2% will do just fine.
Biscuits: We linked our famous homemade biscuits up above, but if you want to go an even easier route, try our 7 Up Biscuits!

Melt your butter in a sauce pan.
Stir in the cocoa powder and flour until it is well combined and begins to get bubbly.
Stir in sugar until the mixture is nice and thick.
Slowly pour in milk while whisking constantly. Continue stirring until the mixture has thickened into a gravy.
Turn off the heat and whisk in a pinch of salt and a dash of vanilla.
Pour your warm chocolate gravy over freshly baked biscuits and dig in!

To “A Chef”,
Not sure why you were so rude, but you are also SO wrong. It most certainly IS a gravy.

Love chocolate gravy! It’s been a family tradition of our since I was little.
On a side note, there’s a word for “bubbly from the heat.” It’s called “boiling.”

I grew up on Chocolate Gravy and it made my day to see this post. My friends all thought we were crazy when my mother would make biscuits and chocolate gravy for breakfast after sleepovers, then they would request it the next time. lol It is still our Christmas morning breakfast favorite!
I am so glad I was directed to your blog! A link for your bacon and cheese dip is floating around Facebook and now I am a fan.

When my daughter was a teenager we would have a chocolate gravy party on Sunday morning before church and all her friends would gather round the table…good times…sweet memories made. MY grandmother also made sugar syrup when I was young. Anyone ever eat warm buttery sweet sugar syrup? Yum!

Awesome, Karly! My favorite with biscuits (up until I read this) was maple syrup over biscuits. Chocolate gravy has that beat hands down!

Note to self: Do NOT read this blog when hungry.
But do forward recipes to husband, as a subtle hint.

I am so tickled that you posted this! My family eats this as often as we dare, but we call it “chocolate and biscuits”. This is our “go to” breakfast for all special occassions such as holidays, first day of school, hooray for you days, and I just want today to be special type days too. My mom grew up on it (I think they had it every Sunday), and my grandad grew up on it too. Both of my teenaged daughters have it memorized so no matter where there are they can whip up a batch too. Thanks for shring it with the world!
