This creamy chipotle sauce recipe is made with a mix of mayo & sour cream with lime juice and spicy chipotle sauce! If you love the Taco Bell creamy chipotle sauce, you’ll love our fresh homemade version even more!
I’m a sucker for a dip or drizzle of sauce and you’ll often find me ordering chicken strips with about 4 or 5 different sauces for dipping.
Can’t help it – a dip or drizzle of sauce just makes food more exciting!
Our Creamy Chipotle Sauce is just the thing for spicing up dinner with it’s creamy blend of mayo, sour cream, and the bright, roasty toasty flavor of chipotle peppers.
If you love Taco Bell like I love Taco Bell (and no, I’m not ashamed to admit it!!), you’re going to want to give this sauce a try. The Taco Bell creamy chipotle sauce is a fan fav and now you can make it at home for spreading on quesadillas, dipping chips, drizzling over tacos, or even dunking french fries.
We love the flavor of chipotle, as evidenced by our recipe for Chipotle Ranch Dressing, so this sauce is just a big hit around here.

Sour Cream & Mayo – We like the combo of creamy mayo with tangy sour cream for the base of our sauce.
Chipotle Sauce – You should be able to find chipotle sauce near the canned chipotle peppers in adobe sauce. Substitution option down below.
Lime Juice – A freshly juiced lime is going to provide the best flavor here, but you could use the bottled stuff if you need to.
Salt & Paprika – To balance out the flavors and to add a bit of color to the sauce! You could also use smoked paprika to add a bit of smoky flavor.
What We Love About This Recipe:
- You can make this as spicy or as mild as you like by adjusting the chipotle sauce used or by blending an actual chipotle pepper.
- We love all the different things you can serve with this chipotle sauce! See below for serving suggestions.
- This is reminiscent of the Taco Bell creamy chipotle sauce, and we love Taco Bell in this house!
- Sometimes a simple dinner just needs a little pizazz and this sauce is the way to add it. Only takes a couple of minutes to whip up and the payoff is huge.
How To Make Creamy Chipotle Sauce:
Mix: There isn’t a whole to this creamy chipotle sauce recipe, just some quick and easy stirring! Start by adding the sour cream and mayonnaise to a small mixing bowl and whisk those together until smooth.
Note: Whisking together the sour cream and mayo before the other ingredients will help prevent any lumps in the chipotle sauce!
Add in the rest of the ingredients and stir until smooth and creamy.
Citrus Juicer
Freshly squeezed lime and lemon juice is useful in lots of recipes, and this tool makes it easy and mess free.
Chill & Serve: To get the best flavor out of this sauce you’ll want to let it chill in the fridge for an hour or two before serving!
Substitutions:
We buy small cans of chipotle sauce near the canned chipotle peppers in adobo sauce. It’s a sauce made of pureed tomatoes and chipotle peppers.
If you’re unable to find chipotle sauce, you can sub in 1 chipotle pepper along with a bit of the adobo sauce. Add all of the ingredients to a blender or food processor and process until smooth.
This may make your sauce a bit more spicy than if you use chipotle sauce so feel free to reduce as needed.
Taco Bell Creamy Chipotle Sauce:
The kids and I absolutely love Taco Bell and I’m not ashamed to admit it. It might not be real Mexican food, but it’s delicious drive-thru garbage and I love the taste of it. 😉
My husband isn’t nearly as big of a fan, so we often make Taco Bell copycat recipes at home like this!
Taco Bell uses this sauce in many of their burritos, their creamy chicken chipotle melt, and more depending on the menu options available.
