This CHOCOLATE STRAWBERRY DUMP CAKE is made with just three ingredients! It’s one of the easiest desserts you’ll ever make and it’s absolutely delicious. So much chocolate goodness!
I always hesitate to share recipes like this with you guys for 2 reasons:
- It’s probably been done before in a million other places (I try not to Google, because it’s depressing to see someone else thought of it before you!)
- Someone somewhere is going to tell me I’m a horrible human being for using a box of cake mix and a can of fruit filling.
But you know what?
This dump cake is AMAZING.
It was actually my sister-in-law’s idea and I tell ya…that girl knows her desserts!
The chocolate cake topping is divine. The strawberry filling is everything you could hope for. The salted butter that bakes into the cake gives the topping this little hint of salt that pairs so amazingly with the sweet.
Also, hello, have you even considered that you can put a giant scoop of vanilla ice cream on top?
This. Is. Heaven.
How to Make:
This is a three ingredient recipe that doesn’t even involve stirring, so the ‘how to’ is quick and simple!
Pour two cans of strawberry pie filling into a baking dish.
Pour the dry cake mix over the top of the pie filling.
Cover the cake mix with thin slices of butter.
Bake until the filling is hot and gooey and the topping is set.
I told ya this was easy! 😉
Helpful Tips!
- I used Devil Food’s cake mix for this one. It’s a darker chocolate. Use any variety of chocolate cake mix you prefer.
- The cake mix goes on DRY! Don’t add the eggs, oil, or water as called for on the box.
- Swap out the strawberries for cherry pie filling!
- It’s going to feel like a lot of butter. Just have faith.

I’d love to make this however, can it be made it in a crockpot? Not sure if the measurements would still be the same…as far as 12 tbsp of butter versus 1 stick.
Karly Campbell says
I haven’t tried this one in the crockpot, but I know these are a very popular crockpot recipe. I don’t think the butter amount would change, but since I haven’t tested it I can’t say for sure.
Robin Luker says
Can this be frozen?
Karly says
I’ve never tried freezing this one. I’m not sure how it would do.

Delicious and the only thing I did differently was to melt the butter and pour over the mix. My favorite combination is apple pie filling with a spice cake mix and extra pumpkin pie spice on the top and a little brown sugar sprinkled on last!!

I decided to make this for my mothers birthday. I msde my own strawberry pie filling as it tastes so much better and is so easy to do. I do have a question though, can i make this ahead of time or should it be served oven fresh?
Karly says
I think it would be fine to make ahead. ๐

One of my favorite dump cakes is a lemon cake mix with blueberry pie filling?? All combos are delicious. Thanks for sharing!
Karly says
Sounds delicious!

I love this recipe for two reasons, 1st it’s easy to make, and 2nd strawberry & chocolate is great together. Using boxed cake mix and canned fruit is how you make a proper dump cake.

Can I use a vanilla cake mix?
Karly says
Yep, any variety of cake mix will work.
Mike says
Do you have ro use a glass backing dish ?
Karly says
We prefer glass for baking cakes, but you can use metal if that’s what you have on hand.

I have tried this with cherries – it is divine – so decadent! I even added a little bit of chocolate chips to make it even more decadent. Topped with vanilla bean ice cream – you can’t go wrong.

Karly, these are fantastic recipes when you need an easy dessert! I make a peach dessert the same way – yellow cake mix, 2 cans of peach pie filling and butter on top then bake, sometimes I add walnuts or pecan to the top. They are delicious! I am excited to try this as this combination is classic!
Karly says
Hope you love it as much as the peach version! I’m pretty sure any combo of fruit + cake is a hit! ๐
